Book: Memoirs of a Goldfish by Devin Scillian; illustrated by Tim Bowers

memoirs-of-a-goldfish

A little goldfish is frustrated by his crowded living situation. But does he really want to live alone? One of my absolute favorite books to read aloud.

Flannel: Five Fancy Fish
Five fancy goldfish at the pet store,
I’ll buy one for my mom and now there are four.
Four fancy goldfish looking at me,
I’ll buy one for my dad and now there are three.
Three fancy goldfish in a fishbowl they outgrew,
I’ll buy one for grandma and now there are two.
Two fancy goldfish, scales shining in the sun,
I’ll buy one for grandpa and now there is one.
One fancy goldfish swimming just for fun,
I’ll take this one home with me and now there are none!

Song: If You’re a Doggie and You Know It
If you’re a doggie and you know it say, “Woof, woof.”
If you’re a doggie and you know it say, “Woof, woof.”
If you’re a doggie and you know it and you really want to show it,
If you’re a doggie and you know it say, “Woof, woof.”

Song/Scarves: We Wave Our Scarves Together (to the tune of For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow)

We wave them low, (sing/wave low)
We wave them in the middle,
Because it’s fun to do!

We throw our scarves together,
We throw our scarves together,
We throw our scarves together,
Because it’s fun to do!

We throw them high, (throw/sing high)
We throw them low, (throw/sing low)
We throw them in the middle,
Because it’s fun to do!

Book: What Pet to Get? by Emma Dodd

what pet to get.jpg

A little boy can’t decide what pet to get. A polar bear? A dinosaur? A buffalo? The kids loved calling out the names of the animals the boy was debating.

Action Rhyme: I Had a Little Turtle
I had a little turtle, (hands on top of each other, wiggle thumbs)
He lived in a box. (make a box with hands)
He swam in the river, (paddle with hands)
He climbed on the rocks. (climbing motions)
He snapped at a mosquito, (pinch fingers in air)
He snapped at a flea, (pinch fingers in air)
He snapped at a minnow, (pinch fingers in air)
And he snapped at me! (pinch fingers toward self)
He caught the mosquito, (clap)
He caught the flea, (clap)
He caught the minnow, (clap)
But he didn’t catch me! (shake head and point at self)

Book: Pet Shop Lullaby by Mary Ann Fraser

Hamster loves to play at night. The other animals at the pet shop do not. How can they get him to sleep? This book doesn’t have many words so I ended up “writing” the story myself. Next time I think I’ll try The Pigeon Wants a Puppy! by Mo Willems.

Song: Baby Shark
Baby shark do do do do do do (shark mouth with two fingers)
Baby shark do do do do do do
Baby shark do do do do do do
Baby shark

Other verses:
Mama Shark (shark mouth with hands connected at the wrists)
Daddy Shark (shark mouth with whole arms)
Grandma Shark (shark mouth like mama shark but with fists)
Grandpa Shark (shark mouth like daddy shark but with fists)
Shark attack (snap arms overhead)
Swim away (swimming motion with arms)
Safe at last (jazz hands)

Closing Song: It’s Time to Say Goodbye to All Our Friends (to the tune of She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain When She Comes)
It’s time to say goodbye to all our friends, “Goodbye!” (tap knees)
It’s time to say goodbye to all our friends, “Goodbye!”
It’s time to say goodbye,
Wave your hands and wink your eye, (wave, wink)
Now it’s time to say goodbye to all our friends, “Goodbye!”
