Garden Story Time (Arboretum 2018)

I don’t usually work on Fridays but I’m making up hours I was supposed to work but we were closed due to snow. Our full-time children’s librarian usually does a story time once a month at a local arboretum but she’s out sick today so I filled in. It’s outside in a teeny auditorium-type setting. It was humid and there were bees EVERYWHERE. This might be a good time to tell you I’m an indoor girl …

Welcome Song: Time for Storytime (to the tune of London Bridge is Falling Down)
Come along and clap with me, clap with me, clap with me,
Come along and clap with me, it’s time for story time.

Stomp with me // Stretch with me // Clap with me

This is the other librarian’s welcome song so I don’t know what her source is.

Song: The Farmer and the Seeds (to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell)
The farmer plants the seeds, (pretend to plant seeds)
The farmer plants the seeds,
Hi, ho, the dairy-o, (slap knees)
The farmer plants the seeds.

The sun comes out to shine (circle arms overhead) //
The rain begins to fall (flutter fingers down) //
The seeds begin to grow (flutter hands up)

Book: Whose Garden Is It? by Mary Ann Hoberman; illustrated by Jane Dyer

whose garden is it

I love this rhyming story. The gardener claims the garden is his but what about the creatures who live there and the elements that keep it growing? Whose garden is it really?

Flannel: There’s Something in My Garden
There’s something in my garden,
Now what can it be? (shrug shoulders)
There’s something in my garden,
That I can’t really see. (cover eyes)
Hear it’s funny sound … (put hand to ear)
RIBBIT RIBBIT RIBBIT
A frog is what I found!

SQUEAK SQUEAK SQUEAK … A mouse is what I found! //
TWEET TWEET TWEET … A bird is what I found! //
THUMP THUMP THUMP … A rabbit is what I found!
Adapted from SurLaLune Storytime

Song: This is the Way My Garden Grows (to the tune of The Mulberry Bush)
This is the way we dig a hole, dig a hole, dig a hole, (pretend to dig hole)
This is the way we dig a hole, in our springtime garden.

Plant the seeds (pretend to plant seeds) //
Rain falls down (flutter fingers down) //
Sun shines down (circle arms over head) //
Our flowers grow (flutter fingers up)

This was from the other librarian’s story time plan. I don’t know her source.

Book: My Garden by Kevin Henkes

my_garden

A little girl imagines what her garden would be like if she could grow anything she wanted. I told the parents a great follow up activity at home is to create your own imaginary garden. What would you plant there? What color would things be? I told them I’d put in an ice cream cone tree. 🙂

Song: All Through the Garden (to the tune of The Wheels on the Bus)
The bees on the flowers go buzz, buzz, buzz,
Buzz, buzz, buzz,
Buzz, buzz, buzz,
The bees on the flowers go buzz, buzz, buzz,
All through the garden.

Butterflies in the air go flutter, flutter, flutter (make butterfly with hands and flutter wings) //
The ants in the garden go march, march, march (march feet) //
The spiders in the garden go climb, climb, climb (climb fingers up)

Other librarian’s song. I don’t know the source.

Song: The Itsy, Bitsy Spider

Book: Butterfly, Butterfly by Petr Horacek

butterfly-butterfly

A little girl finds a butterfly but the next day it’s gone. As she’s searching her garden for her friend, she discovers other creatures. This book is great for color story times as well and the pop-up butterfly surprise at the end is always a big hit!

Closing Song: It’s Time to Say Goodbye to All Our Friends (to the tune of She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain When She Comes)
It’s time to say goodbye to all our friends, “Goodbye!” (tap knees)
It’s time to say goodbye to all our friends, “Goodbye!”
It’s time to say goodbye,
Wave your hands and wink your eye, (wave, wink)
Now it’s time to say goodbye to all our friends, “Goodbye!”
