Summer Story Time (2018)

Welcome Song: Clap and Sing Hello (to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell)
We clap and sing hello,
We clap and sing hello,
With our friends at story time,
We clap and sing hello!
We wave and sing hello // We stomp and sing hello

Song: Clap, Clap, Clap Your Hands
Clap, clap, clap your hands, clap them now with me.
Clap your hands, let me see, clap them now with me.
Wiggle your feet // Stretch your arms // Zip your lips

Book: Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall

An African-American kid that’s not dealing with the Civil Rights Movement?? *gasp* I love this book about a little boy who wants to jump off the diving board but has some reservations. What kid can’t relate? And of course, I love the minority character in the starring role AND he’s hanging out with dad. Awesome. The illustrations are absolutely beautiful as well.

Song/Rhythm Sticks: This is the Way We Tap Our Sticks (to the tune of Mulberry Bush)
This is the way we tap our sticks,
Tap our sticks, tap our sticks,
This is the way we tap our sticks,
So early in the morning.

Scrape our sticks // Hammer our sticks // Tap them soft // Tap them loud // Drum the floor

Song/Rhythm Sticks: Down By the Bay by Raffi

I stubbornly continued trying to play a “real” song during rhythm stick time. And this time it worked pretty well! I got down on the floor to play with the kids. We drummed on the floor, we scraped, we tapped over our heads … maybe getting down to their level and displaying ridiculous amounts of enthusiasm actually worked! 😀

Book: Mouse’s First Summer by Lauren Thompson; illustrated by Buket Erdogan

Mouse and Minka explore the sights and sounds of summer together. A classic Mouse book. Always a winner.

Song: Splashin’ Up and Down
Splashin’ up and down in my little red rowboat (bounce up and down)
Splashin’ up and down in my little red rowboat
Splashin’ up and down in my little red rowboat
Won’t you be my darling?

Lookin’ out to sea (shade eyes) // Wavin’ to a whale (wave) // Don’t stand up or you might tip over (lean to right or left)

Egg Shakers: Shake It by Sally’s Music Circle

Book: The Night Before Summer Vacation by Natasha Wing; illustrated by Julie Durrell

the night before summer vacation

I wish this book came in hardcover to make it easier to read at story time. I love this rhyming story of a family getting ready for their annual summer vacation trip.

Closing Song: It’s Time to Say Goodbye to All Our Friends (to the tune of She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain When She Comes)
It’s time to say goodbye to all our friends, “Goodbye!” (tap knees)
It’s time to say goodbye to all our friends, “Goodbye!”
It’s time to say goodbye,
Wave your hands and wink your eye, (wave, wink)
Now it’s time to say goodbye to all our friends, “Goodbye!”
