The librarian who usually covers toddler story time was out sick today so I filled in. Birds is one of my favorite story time themes!
Song: Open Shut Them
Open shut them, open shut them
Give a little clap, clap, clap.
Open shut them, open shut them
Put them in your lap, lap, lap.
Creep them, crawl them
Creep them, crawl them
Right up to your chin, chin, chin.
Open up your mouth …
But do not let them in!
Song: Zoom Zoom Zoom, We’re Going to the Moon
Zoom zoom zoom, we’re going to the moon
Zoom zoom zoom, we’re going to the moon
If you want to take a trip, climb aboard my rocket ship
Zoom zoom zoom, we’re going to the moon
In 5-4-3-2-1
BLASTOFF!
Song: I Like to Dance (to the tune of Skip to My Lou)
I like to dance, how about you?
I like to dance, how about you?

Skip to my lou, my darling!
Jump // Clap // Spin // Wiggle // Stomp // Yawn // Sleep
My coworker found this song and I don’t know her source. It’s one of her regular songs and the kids loved it. Having the kids “sleep” before our first story was a great way to get them calm and quiet!
Book: North, South, East, West by Margaret Wise Brown; pictures by Greg Pizzoli
A little bird asks her mommy which is best: north, south, east or west? What will she decide after exploring for herself?
Song: The Owl in the Tree (to the tune of The Wheels on the Bus)
The owl in the tree goes, “Hoo, hoo hoo,”
“Hoo, hoo hoo,”
“Hoo, hoo hoo,”
The owl in the tree goes, “Hoo, hoo hoo,”
All through the day.
The robin in the nest goes, “Tweet, tweet, tweet” //
The duck in the pond goes, “Quack, quack, quack” //
The rooster in the yard goes “Cock-a-doodle-doo”
I don’t know her source for this song either but the kids really liked it.

Great Big Hairy Spider (sung deeply)
Book: Duck Sock Hop by Jane Kohuth; illustrated by Jane Porter
Rhyming book about ducks and socks. A cute tongue twister!
Song: Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
Goodbye Song: Clap, Clap, Clap Your Hands
Clap, clap, clap your hands, clap your hands together
Clap, clap, clap your hands, clap your hands together
Tap, tap, tap your feet // Wave, wave, wave goodbye
