It’s been awhile since I’ve posted an outreach story time (mostly because they’re same old, same old) but this one was really cute so I wanted to add it. 🙂
Welcome Song: Clap and Sing Hello (to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell)
We clap and sing hello,
We clap and sing hello,
With our friends at story time,
We clap and sing hello!
We tap and sing hello // We stretch and sing hello // We wave and sing hello

Song: The Wheels on the Bus
The wheels on the bus go round and round
Round and round, round and round
The wheels on the bus round and round
All through the town
The wipers on the bus go swish, swish, swish //
The horn on the bus goes beep, beep, beep //
The doors on the bus go open and shut //
The driver on the bus goes move it on back //
The people on the bus go up and down //
The babies on the bus go wah, wah, wah //
The people on the bus go shh, shh, shh
Book: Library Lion by Michelle Knudsen; illustrated by Kevin Hawkes
A classic. A lion wanders into the library and doesn’t leave. Technically, he’s not breaking any rules so they allow him to say. But there’s one firm library rule: no roaring! This book is very long so I would only attempt to read it with my outreach kids (and I think even they thought it was a little much) but it’s so sweet and the illustrations are just darling.Â
Song: Row Row Row Your Boat
I do three verses of this classic:
Row row row your boat (the traditional way) //
Rock rock rock your boat, sway from side to side
Merrily merrily merrily merrily what a bumpy ride (bump hands on lap) //
Row row row your boat, gently down the stream
If you see a crocodile (crocodile snap with arms)
Don’t forget to scream (*AH*)
Song: Itsy Bitsy Spider
Itsy Bitsy Spider (sung normally)
Teeny Weeny Spider (sung in falsetto)
Great Big Hairy Spider (sung deeply)
Song: Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes
Sung three times, getting faster each time.
Wiggle Rhyme: Watch Out for the Bugs(to the tune of Jingle Bells)
Clap your hands, stomp your feet
Wiggle all around
Throw your hands up in the air and now let’s touch the ground
Touch your head, touch your hips, give yourself a hug
Now sit down upon the floor
But watch out for the bugs!! (stamp out the bugs)
Book: Miss Brooks Loves Books! (And I Don’t) by Barbara Bottner; illustrated by Michael Emberley
I read this at my regular story time and I’ve always loved it. The kids I do outreach with are fantastic readers, they’re not reluctant in the least, but who doesn’t love a story about a whole classroom of snorting ogres?
Book/Song: If You’re Happy and You Know It by David A. Carter
We keep this pop-up book in our private library collection which keeps it in good shape. I love doing this one with the kids. They love anything active!
Song/Puppet: Five Little Monkeys
Five little monkeys swinging from the tree,
Teasing Mr. Alligator, “You can’t catch me!”
Along comes Mr. Alligator, quiet as can be and …
SNAPS that monkey right out of that tree!
Four // Three // Two // One
But those monkeys were clever you see,
And they all found their way back to that tree!
Book: Bunny’s Book Club by Annie Silvestro; illustrated by Tatjana Mai-Wyss
Bunny loves to listen to story time at the library in the summer when it’s on the porch. But then fall comes and it moves inside. So he shimmies in the return slot and discovers the library! Little by little he and his friends take books home … but then they’re caught by the librarian! This book is so sweet and perfect for a book and bunny story time.
Song: Ten Little Bunnies (to the tune of 10 Little Indians)
One little, two little, three little bunnies,
Four little, five little, six little bunnies,
Seven little, eight little, nine little bunnies,
Ten little bunnies hopping up and down!
Twirling all around // Standing on one foot // Wiggling their ears // Playing peek a boo

Egg Shakers: Shake It by Sally’s Music Circle
Book: Big Mean Mike by Michelle Knudsen; illustrated by Scott Magoon
Big Mean Mike has a reputation to uphold. It’s no good when cute little white fluffy bunnies start showing up in his big mean car. I thought this book was super cute (very tongue in cheek with the “mean”). But one of the outreach kids said it was scary so know your audience and proceed with caution …
Song: Baby Shark
Baby shark do do do do do do (shark mouth with two fingers)
Baby shark do do do do do do
Baby shark do do do do do do
Baby shark
Other verses:
Mama Shark (shark mouth with hands connected at the wrists)
Daddy Shark (shark mouth with whole arms)
Grandma Shark (shark mouth like mama shark but with fists)
Shark attack (snap arms overhead)
Swim away (swimming motion with arms)
Safe at last (jazz hands)

The kids came to visit me at the library for this story time so at this point they were able to pick out a couple books for themselves to take back to school. I love when they’re able to do this! (Sometimes I go there if the weather isn’t nice since they walk over.) It’s so much fun to help them find their favorites (mostly Pinkalicious and Fancy Nancy) … *sigh*
