Winter Story Time (2020)

So, this will be my last story time post for awhile! I’ve accepted a new job as a Youth Services Librarian where I’ll be working mostly with teens. I might cover a story time here or there but I don’t think they’ll be a part of my regular programming as they were at this job.

I’ll continue to share my programming and whatever I’ll be doing in the new place. For those of you who read, thank you. I hope you’ll continue to visit!

Welcome Song: Clap and Sing Hello (to the tune of The Farmer in the Dell)
We clap and sing hello,
We clap and sing hello,
With our friends at story time,
We clap and sing hello!

We tap and sing hello (tap knees) //
We stretch and sing hello (stretch arms up) //
We wave and sing hello (wave)

Song: The Itsy Bitsy Spider

Song:  Snow on the Rooftops (to the tune of Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star)
Snow on the rooftops, (make pointed roof shape with arms over head)
Snow on the trees, (hold out arms like branches)
Snow on the green grass, (wave hands over the ground like touching grass)
And snow on me! (point to self)

Snow on my mittens, (hold up hands)
Snow on my nose. (point to nose)
Snow on my head, (touch head)
And snow on my toes. (touch toes)

Twirling, swirling, whirling down, (spin in circle)
Down and down and down and down. (flutter hands down)

Book: William’s Winter Nap by Linda Ashman; pictures by Chuck Groenink

william's winter nap.jpg

Rhyming book about William settling down for a nap. But the doorbell keeps ringing! Will there be enough room for everyone to snuggle? Adorable and lovely. (And manages to sneak in a little hibernation lesson as well!)

Flannel Board: Five Little Snowflakes
One little snowflake with nothing to do,
Along came another and now there are two.
Two little snowflakes laughing with me,
Along came another and now there are three.
Three little snowflakes looking for some more,
Along came another and now there are four.
Four little snowflakes dancing a jive,
Along came another and now there are five.
Five little snowflakes having so much fun,
Out came the sun and now there are none!

Song/Scarves: Popcorn Kernels (to the tune of Frere Jacques; sing each line twice)
Popcorn kernels, (wave scarves overhead)
In the pot. (make scarves ‘disappear’ by bunching them in their fists)
Shake them, shake them, shake them, (shake)
’til they POP! (throw scarves into the air)

Song/Scarves: One Bright Scarf (to the tune of 10 Little Indians)
One bright scarf waiting for the wind to blow, (hold in hand)
Wiggle it high, (wiggle above head)
Wiggle it low, (wiggle by knees)
Shake it fast, (shake fast)
Shake it slow, (shake slow)
Put it behind your back. (put scarf behind your back)
Where did it go? (bring out empty hands; shrug)

Song/Scarves: We Wave Our Scarves Together (to the tune of For He’s a Jolly Good Fellow)
We wave our scarves together,
We wave our scarves together,
We wave our scarves together,
Because it’s fun to do!

We wave them high, (sing/wave high)
We wave them low, (sing/wave low)
We wave them in the middle,
Because it’s fun to do!

We throw our scarves together,
We throw our scarves together,
We throw our scarves together,
Because it’s fun to do!

We throw them high, (throw/sing high)
We throw them low, (throw/sing low)
We throw them in the middle,
Because it’s fun to do!

Book: First Snow by Nancy Viau; pictures by Talitha Shipman

first snow

Rhyming book about children playing in the snow with their friends. I love the diverse cast of characters.

Egg Shakers: Shake It by Sally’s Music Circle

Book: Snowy, Blowy Winter by Bob Raczka; illustrated by Judy Stead

snowy-blowy-winter

Short rhyming book about winter and all that kids love to do in this season. I had a younger crowd today so I did two relatively short books.

Song: The Wheels on the Bus

Song: It’s Time to Say Goodbye to All Our Friends (to the tune of She’ll Be Comin’ Round the Mountain When She Comes)
It’s time to say goodbye to all our friends, “Goodbye!”
It’s time to say goodbye to all our friends, “Goodbye!”
It’s time to say goodbye,
Wave your hands,
Wink your eye,
Oh, it’s time to say goodbye to all our friends, “Goodbye!”
